Hidden among the beautiful rolling hills of Cumberland County, Mechanicsburg invites you to slow down and savor the past in a relaxed rural setting. This patchwork quilt of pastures, farmhouses, bed and breakfast homes and small towns displays historical charm and the region’s natural beauty in every season.

Cumberland County is a popular location for many bed and breakfast establishments, attracting many tourists and visitors to the area. The presence of tourists helps stimulate local economy and provides sound business for Mechanicburg’s many cultural and regional specialty shops, boutiques, and restaurants. The various bed and breakfast inns offer period settings for every style and era, from colonial tavern-inns to Victorian homes, to a gentleman’s farm. These relaxed and romantic lodgings are the perfect setting to escape from it all.

For south central Pennsylvania’s natural splendor, there is no place like Cumberland County. Mechanicsburg’s fishing fanatics take joy in rising to the angling challenge afforded to them by the area’s plethora of world famous creeks and streams, teeming with trout, large and small mouth bass, pickerel and walleyes. Hikers will find happiness on a stretch of the Appalachian Trail while campers take advantage of the outdoor amenities found in nearby Pine Grove Furnace State Park. This 969-acre park comes with over 70 various camping sites, beach swimming and boat launching areas. For those interested in learning about the environment, the King’s Gap Environmental Education Center offers patrons a unique classroom. This 1,439-acre reserve comes with 15 miles of hiking trails and features ranger-presented environmental education and interpretive programs throughout the year for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

The city of Carlisle, no more than a five-minute drive from downtown Mechanicsburg, is a treasure chest for antique shoppers and collectors. From indoor antique shops to outdoor antique flea markets, people enjoy discovering the perfect souvenir finds to enhance their homes. The town is also consumed by seasonal celebrations, offering visitors many opportunities to experience the arts, crafts and culture of south central Pennsylvania. Each fall, the town’s Arts Festival and Octoberfest combine a bit of history with cultural entertainment, craftsmanship and, of course, day long brass music.

Furthermore, neighboring Allenberry Resort and Playhouse, located in Boiling Springs, along the scenic Yellow Breeches Creek, presents a vast array of fine productions for any season in a charming dinner theater setting. These pleasurable events fill each year’s social calendar, enabling residents to enjoy entertaining activities without having to travel far from home.

The town of Hershey is also within reach of Mechanicsburg, offering residents thrilling attractions, luxurious accommodations, breathtaking gardens and sweet deals on mouth-watering treats. This chocolate covered candy kingdom has grown from a private Hershey company town to an internationally known community, complete with a world-class amusement park and resort complex. Throughout this community, visitors will find reminders of its sweet heritage, from the heavenly smell of chocolate in the making to street names such as Chocolate and Cocoa Avenues that are lined with Hershey’s Kisses as street lights. Beyond the chocolate, however, adventure awaits at Hersheypark. This world-famous attraction comes complete with heart-pounding roller coasters and show-stopping entertainment.

Adjacent to the park stands Zoo America, an 11-acre year round North American wild life park featuring more than 200 animals and 75 species. Special seasonal events include a series of “Creatures of the Night” shows and exhibits. In the wintertime, Hersheypark is transformed by half a million tiny twinkling lights into Christmas Candylane, a holiday favorite for people of all ages. Children can ride the carousel, visit with Santa and enjoy sweet treats while in this winter wonderland.

Mechanicsburg is a direct beneficiary of the entertainment and excitement provided by its neighboring towns and its residents take complete advantage of every opportunity afforded them. If you have a flair for the past and a passion to experience new frontiers in an old town setting, Mechanicsburg and the Capital Region may just be the right place for you to call home.
